Skype is an internet communication software package that allows users

to make telephone calls over the Internet.  The program can also be

used to send Instant messages to other Skype users or send SMS

messages to mobile phone users.

Skype is available on Microsoft and Mac OSX operating systems.

Information relating to specific user activity and user settings can

be identified easily as a single or series of live files.

There can be multiple skype profile folders on a single computer.

Potential to recover skype data files from unallocated space also exists.

The content of a skype user folder may contain several files example

data files include:

  • main.db
  • call256.dbb
  • chat512.dbb
  • chatmsg256.dbb
  • chatmsg512.dbb

The content of the data files can include but is not limited to contact

information, sms & chat messages, file transfer and voicemail activity.

The content of the Skype data files can be extracted for further inspection using the Skype Extractor, a forensic software tool part of the SC Suite.
